Working within the Transport Industry I have found Australian Fatigue Management very helpful in all required fields, their online presentation is easy to navigate and relevant information to what was required, the content was sufficient and very helpful with if any follow up questions or assistance that was needed. AFM responded quickly and the training coordinator John, provided a personal touch to online learning which was refreshing. The course material was practical and included relevant real-world guidance for managing fatigue. I learnt the skills needed, got my certificate and was then able to get back to work. :)

TLIF0005 Fatigue Management Course

TLIF0005 Apply a fatigue risk management system

TLIF0005 Apply a fatigue risk management system is the current mandated nationally recognised fatigue management training for heavy vehicle drivers operating under National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme (NHVAS) and the National Heavy Vehicle Law (NHVL).

The course involves learning the skills and knowledge required for heavy vehicle drivers to manage fatigue and to work safely within the Transport and Logistics industry. The competency applies to bus and truck drivers operating within a National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) accredited Basic Fatigue Management system (BFM) or Advanced (AFM) Fatigue Management system.

The course includes the identification of fatigue risk, applying fatigue risk management strategies, identifying and acting on signs of fatigue, operating within a fatigue risk management system, planning and navigating trips, updating and maintaining records, complying with work and rest limits, and implementing appropriate strategies to minimise fatigue during work activities.

Additionally, this course includes the Western Australian and Northern Territory Fatigue Management regulatory requirements, providing valid certification in all Australian jurisdictions.

Being awarded this unit of competency is a necessary requirement to operate under NHVR Fatigue Management Accreditation but it is only one of the criteria. Prospective applicants should check with the NHVR before undertaking training and/or assessment.

This course consists five (5) online theory sections, a short answer written section, a practical exercise and completion interview which can be completed using computer or smartphone devices which have a web camera.  The theory training and practical tasks are completed at your own pace either at your workplace or at home.

Your practical assessment is undertaken in simulated workplace operations using the AFM model company AFM Logistics which provides all policies, plans, procedure, forms and records needed to complete this part of the assessment.

Students should note that access to relevant personal protective equipment (PPE) is a requirement whilst undertaking this course, refer to the Workplace Based Learning Resources in the AFM Pre-enrolment Information Guide for PPE relative to completing this course

AFM provides all learning resources and training videos to assist students in achieving the required competency. There is a knowledge based online assessment followed by practical tasks which are completed and uploaded through our Learning Management System.

Students need to provide:

  • Black or blue pen
  • Ruler

AFM Admission Criteria

AFM has in place admission criteria for courses in its Scope of Registration as required by its enrolment procedures to ensure that students meet industry requirements and are able to succeed with their enrolment. The admission criteria are articulated in through AFM marketing and include the following:

  • You must be eligible to study with us, AFM is not a CRICOS registered RTO, if you are on a student visa, (Class 500) AFM is unable to offer you enrolment under the ESOS Act (2000).
  • Students are required to be competent in written and spoken English and will undertake a Language, Literacy and Numeracy review prior to enrolment being accepted by AFM;
  • Students must be 18 years of age or more;
  • Students must have a valid and current driver’ s licence with a heavy vehicle endorsement;
  • Students will be engaged with, employed by, or contracted by, a company in the transport industry where fatigue regulations may or may not apply;
  • Students require access to a computer or tablet device, that has camera capability to complete the recorded video competency conversation.
  • An email address and Internet connection is required to enable access to the nationally recognised course materials. It should be noted that students are not required to have these resources but they must have access to them;
  • Students may choose to access some of the course materials and assessment using a smart phone as an alternative to a desktop computer.
  • You must have reviewed and agreed to our procedures, terms and conditions as stated in the Student Handbook.

AFM have produced high quality learning materials to support you in your learning journey. Our learning resources includes videos to help reinforce your knowledge in a fun and easy to use way.

Your progress is automatically saved so you can close the learning management system and come back to your training later.

Course Duration– allow up to 6 hours of online study and up to 3 hours of self-study dependent on existing industry knowledge.

Completion: Students have three calendar months from enrolment to complete their training.

Assessment for TLIF0005 Apply a fatigue risk management system

The assessment for this course consists:

Knowledge questions and practical assessments including:

  • Five (5) theory knowledge assessments
  • Short answer questionnaire
  • Practical exercise which includes:
    • Case Studies
    • National Driver’s Work Diary Exercise
    • Personal fatigue management plan
    • Completion interview by video or teleconference

Your practical assessment is undertaken in simulated workplace operations using the AFM model company AFM Logistics which provides all polies, procedure, forms and records needed to complete this part of the assessment.

To pass the assessment for this course you must meet demonstrate satisfactory performance in all the course assessment criteria. We provide students with support to successfully complete their studies however, if despite this support, you are still unable to demonstrate satisfactory performance after three attempts, don’t worry.  Contact our support line and we can then work with you to complete your studies.

Once you have completed all of your assessment requirements and your assessor has confirmed that you have met all course requirements, you will be able to print your Statement of Attainment. If you need to re-print, simply log in again.
